The Shape of Everything

Honors Geometry

Have you heard a²+b²=c²? Well it isn't true. It depends on where you are! Geometry is a beautiful and complex subject and we'll dive in head first to build our own axiomatic system in Euclidean, Hyperbolic, and Spherical surfaces.

Course Details

Time Commitment

Our courses include 90 minutes of live in-class time per week, as well as access to our online platform. Students should plan to spend 1–3 hours of time outside class completing missions, playing the course games, and completing the challenges.

Delivery

We utilize videoconferencing software for live classes. Course preparation and challenges can be found in our online learning management system.

Homework and Testing

Students complete online text-based missions which may include reading, images and infographics, interactive explorations, videos, and/or digital games to prepare for the live course. After the live course, students will complete challenges akin to a quiz to demonstrate their understanding. We do not administer a formal end-of-class test but rather measure student achievement through a mastery-based amalgamation of their work.

Schedule

This course is offered in the following format(s). Please note, shorter schedules indicate an accelerated pacing.

Course Description

The traditional geometry sequence focuses only on math on a flat plane. Sadly, students are rarely informed of this. They believe the formulas they are memorizing are uniformly valid, when in fact, they don't even apply to the Earth we live on!

MathBait® geometry is notably different. We'll start from the ground up following Euclid's methodology to build our own axiomatic system. We'll pay close attention to our theorems (proving each one), to determine what is true in an area with no curvature (flat plane), an area with positive curvature (a sphere), and an area with negative curvature (hyperbolic geometry). And, we'll leverage technology to master constructing shapes with only two basic tools: the Euclidean compass and the straightedge.

Covering the traditional geometry topics (parallel lines, congruent triangles, quadrilaterals, similarity, right triangles, circles, constructions, transformations, area, volume, and coordinate geometry) we'll expand our understanding using games and explorations to provide students with a strong basis in the mathematics of shapes.

This course is all about the intersection of logic and beauty. From how to draw a perfect shape by hand, to Escheresque tesselations of the plane, to symmetry and duality; we'll discover how nature uses geometry to form incredible structures.

The Shape of Everything goes above and beyond your typical geometry course to include Lambert quadrilaterals, the trapezoid method and Riemann integration, and a full exploration of trigonometry to prepare students to easily transition into a Calculus course. We'll question everything, assume nothing, and have a lot of fun along the way.
