Time Commitment

Our courses include 90 minutes of live in-class time per week, as well as access to our online platform. Students should plan to spend 1–3 hours of time outside class completing missions, playing the course games, and completing the challenges.

Delivery

We utilize videoconferencing software for live classes. Course preparation and challenges can be found in our online learning management system.

Homework and Testing

Students complete online text-based missions which may include reading, images and infographics, interactive explorations, videos, and/or digital games to prepare for the live course. After the live course, students will complete challenges akin to a quiz to demonstrate their understanding. We do not administer a formal end-of-class test but rather measure student achievement through a mastery-based amalgamation of their work.

Course Description

It is never too early to begin building logic skills! Sideways Arithmetic is inspired by Louis Sachar's "absurdist math problems" to help foster natural curiosity and love of learning.

Does one+one really equal two? Our exploration begins as students use symbols to hide numbers creating substitution ciphers to form and solve silly statements. We'll extend this knowledge to cryptography as we create, trade, and decipher secret messages.

Through classical logic games and puzzles such as Sudoku, Bridges, and Lockpicks, we will eliminate the impossible, realizing how knowing what couldn't have happened is a key tool in uncovering the truth.

Applying our problem-solving skills, next, students will release their inner "Sherlock Holmes" to master deduction, induction, and reasoning by solving mysteries and unlocking escape rooms. But the fun doesn't end there! Students will be excited to share their strange facts and even the results of their true/false quiz.

Our course concludes with a glimpse into formal logic with Knights and Knave puzzles, and a courtroom drama to determine guilt and innocence.

Sideways Arithmetic is a MathBait® favorite. Great for curious students, puzzle lovers, or advanced learners, we will build unbelievable skills that will help your child excel in mathematics, algorithmic thinking, and creativity, preparing them for a variety of interests including medicine, law, and technology.
